    Steve started his career by playing several hockey matches at junior stage with Gloucester Rangers. This is a junior ice hockey team from Rockland, Ontario, Canada. In 2017, it has been relocated to Rockland after almost 50 years in Gloucester. Later on, he was enrolled at the Boston University. Where he played various matches on the college stage. Steve has also played one season with the team Peoria Rivermen in the International Hockey League. Most of his career has been spent playing in Europe.

    Steve played a single season with the Klagenfurt Athletic Sports Club in Austria. This team has won most Austrian ice hockey championships which includes 32 trophies. He has played for the Adler Mannheim in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. He has also played five seasons with the Cardiff Devils before moving to the United Kingdom.

    In 2003, Steve won the playoff cup by playing with the London Knights and the Belfast Giants. London Knights was an English ice hockey team and has played in the UK’s Ice Hockey Super League. He has played in this team from September 1998 to April 2003.

    Later on, Steve moved to Italy where he got the opportunity to play with Val Pusteria Wolves. In this team, she spends two seasons.

    During his career life, Steve got various opportunities to play in several countries including Italy, Britain, the UK, Switzerland, and Sweden. Returning from Sweden, he joined the Basingstoke Bison. Basingstoke is an English Ice Hockey club and currently competing in the NHL National League. It has also been a member of the Ice Hockey Super League. Unfortunately due to arena renovation, the team is unable to compete in the upcoming 2024 Season.

    Coaching Career

    On April 7th, 2008, Steve was confirmed as the new coach of the Belfast Giants leagues. He became the charge by replacing the Ed Courtenay. Being the charge of giants, he won three trophies by playing in two seasons.

    In 2010, he departed due to health issues and was replaced by Doug Christiansen.

    On April 28th, 2014, Thornton returned as coach of the Belfast Giants again. He also became the head of the Hockey Operations. Steve was departure upon the Belfast Giants General Manager, Todd Kelman.
